Knowing how much your dog eats in a month helps you pick the right bag size, compare the real cost of each food and reorder before you run out. These are estimates for a healthy adult dog with normal activity. The feeding table on your bag always comes first.

These figures use a standard estimate of daily energy needs for a neutered adult dog and a food with about 3,700 kcal per kg. Foods with more or fewer calories change the amount, so a richer food can last longer than a cheaper one. Small dogs do better with a smaller bag, because an opened bag is best used within about six weeks.

- Activity: working and very active dogs need more, while quiet indoor dogs often need less.
